Seattle Outboard Association will conduct an outboard powerboat regatta
on Capitol Lake on July 11, 12, 13, 2008 as part of the Capital Lakefair
celebrations. Racing will start at about 11:00 am on both Saturday and
Sunday, and continues throughout the afternoon.
As
many as 15 classes of outboard powerboats will be on the program.
Speeds range from 40 mph in the J class for young drivers, to over 100
mph for veteran adult racers using highly modified engines.
Outboard racing is a proving ground for drivers with designs on
professional racing careers. Famed unlimited hydroplane drivers such as
Billy Schumacher and Chip Hanauer came through the ranks as members of
the Seattle Outboard Association. More recently, J.W. Myers and J.
Michael Kelly cut their racing teeth in outboards, before being tabbed
to drive unlimited hydroplanes.
Outboard racing uses a two-heat format to determine class winners.
Drivers are scored in each heat. Points are tallied and the driver with
the most points is the victor. In the event of a point tie, the nod
goes to the driver with the fastest overall speed.
Outboard racing offers an action-packed program filled with thrills,
chills, and spills. Find a place on the lake shore and enjoy the show. |
